The Geometrical Structure of 2D Bond-Orientational Order
We study the formulation of bond-orientational order in an arbitrary two dimensional geometry. We find that bond-orientational order is properly formulated within the framework of differential geometry with torsion. The torsion reflects the intrinsic frustration for two-dimensional crystals with arbitrary geometry. Within a DebyeHuckel approximation, torsion may be identified as the density of ...
متن کاملBond orientational order in the randomly diluted elastic network.
It is proposed that the randomly diluted elastic network of Hooke's-law central-force springs in two dimensions may have a hitherto unrecognized splay-rigid phase in which the bulk and shear moduli vanish but the Frank elastic constant, K, is nonzero. Exponents for the associated splay-rigidity percolation and torsional resistance are estimated by series-expansion techniques. These exponents ar...
متن کاملBond-orientational order in Langmuir-Blodgett surfactant monolayers
Cadmium stearate surfactant molecules assembled into monolayers by the Langmuir-Blodgett method exhibit bond-orientational order. Bond-orientational correlations extend over macroscopic distances on the order of a millimeter while translational correlations decay on a scale of tens of angstroms. The long axis of the molecules are tilted away from the surface normal but the tilt direction is dis...
متن کاملPositional, reorientational, and bond orientational order in DNA mesophases.
We investigate the orientational order of transverse polarization vectors of long, stiff polymer molecules and their coupling to bond orientational and positional order in high density mesophases. Homogeneous ordering of transverse polarization vector promotes distortions in the hexatic phase, whereas inhomogeneous ordering precipitates crystallization of the 2D sections with different orientat...
متن کاملBond orientational order model for smectic B liquid crystals
2014 We show how recent theories of two dimensional melting can be carried over to provide natural order parameters for solid, smectic B, and smectic A phases of liquid crystals. Smectic B and other well-ordered smectic phases correspond to systems with bond orientational long range order and positional short range order in the plane of the smectic layers. The X-ray scattering predicted by this...
